My first ever paying gig was as a snack girl at my Grandma’s bingo hall in Esplen, PA for tips. My job was to take snack orders from the old ladies (they probably weren’t that old), place their order at the snack bar, then deliver them when ready. Of course, this was long before smoking was banned indoors, so I left that bingo hall each night smelling like sweat, smoke, and old lady.
I had a hard time remembering who ordered which snack so I would repeat in my head: french fries/yellow striped shirt, nachos/blue hair, hot dog/big glasses. I’m sure I was pretty terrible at it, which is probably why I never pursued a waitressing job after that. But I do remember feeling a sense of accomplishment for working hard and earning money. This was at least 30 years ago, but I can still remember the adrenaline from a busy night. Those were the times that taught me to work hard no matter the circumstances.
In honor of my Grandma and her bingo hall friends, I created a B I N G O for runners. As runners, we’ve had a lot of the same experiences, the good, the bad, and the embarrassing. Whether you’re a Boston qualifier, came in last place, both or neither, we can all laugh and bond over our shared experiences. Play along and see if you get runner’s bingo. I’ll send the snack girl to bring you some gels for your next marathon.
